Might Can Make Right
Might doesn't make right, but it can make right
Weakness is in and of itself not a good quality. Empathy, sympathy, and the ability to care for others is not weakness.
I've been having a debate with people who say my advice leans too much towards aggression. A few pieces of advice I constantly give:
- Always be looking for your next job, if a recruiter calls, then you answer
- Keep your skills sharp, in case you need them
- Your company is a machine designed to make money
- Your boss is your boss, not your friend
- Self-interest is the best hedge against uncertainty in the market
Now, I am not trying to be John Galt and insinuate that all things come from selfishness.
The point I try to make is that in order to be strong, you must have the capability to stand up for yourself. If you cannot stand for yourself, then you will struggle to stand up for what is right.
You're in a scenario at work where you want to take a big risk on a project and want to voice that opinion and take that risk.
Are you more likely to speak up if...
- You are fully capable to leaving that job and finding a new job
- You are fully beholden to that job to feed yourself and your family
Might does not make right, but with might you can make right.
